What Size Should My Ebook Cover Be?

ebook dimension guide
by CJ McDaniel // July 17

You finished your newest book and the first printed copy just arrived in the mail, and now it’s time to format your awesome cover to fit all the ebook marketplaces.

But it’s tough to tell what is expected of you, because every company you want to submit to has different requirements. What makes it worse is that they change their requirements every few years – so even if you do find written dimensions, there is a good chance that they are old. But up-to-date instructions are troublesome as well, with all of their requirements such as minimum dimension size, recommended dimension size, maximum file size, etc.

I am going to go into detail about why and how my master template works for all of the most important ebook sellers in existence,  but if you want to skip all the tech speak  and jump right to the template, be my guest.

Stop the madness!

Where does it all end, and why can’t it just be simple?! Well I am glad you stopped by, because after years of navigating the submission process for world-famous authors, I have learned how to make it simple and I have even created the perfect template that is sure to meet the requirements of all the top ebook marketplaces.

Why this template works for all vendors

As I briefly mentioned above, every ebook company has multiple specifications. The three main ones are:

• Required dimension size – the smallest size that they will accept and still publish your book
• Recommended dimension size – how large they would like your book to be for optimum crispness of detail
• Maximum file size – how many megabytes the company will allow an images file size to be

Now here is why none of that matters. If you follow every single company’s requirements to the “t,” then you end up having to size your book differently for each one. The required upload sizes of most ebook vendors is very large, like HD TV large. So to prevent you from having to create between 3 and 8 different versions of your cover, we have split the difference and created a template that meets everyone’s requirements and goes above and beyond most recommended dimension sizes. So if you stick with this template you will be doing alright!

If you would still like to know the recommended  dimension sizes of the main ebook marketplaces I have listed them below:
