Publisher (company)

by David Harris // December 16

A publisher (company) that produces and distributes books, magazines, newspapers, or other written works in print. The term can refer to an individual who owns and operates their own publishing company or an entity that is part of a larger organization.

The primary responsibility of a publisher is to make sure that the publication turns a profit while also getting it into the hands of as many people as possible.

The term “publisher” is sometimes used interchangeably with “book publisher,” which refers to companies devoted primarily to making books available. Sometimes, it’s used interchangeably with “trade publisher,” which refers to companies that publish books for general audiences.

Books are not the only type of material publishers (companies) produce; they also put out magazines, newspapers, and other printed materials. Many publishers (companies) now make digital material, such as e-books or apps.

The financial fate of a publication lies squarely in the hands of the publisher. Succeeding in this role means spending less on production and distribution than is earned from sales and considering overheads, including rent, utilities, insurance, and staff salaries.

The responsibility for the quality of a publication also falls on the publisher (company). They must choose content that will be popular with readers and sell enough copies to make a profit. The content must also meet publishing standards and be well-written and edited.

Publishers (companies) are responsible for marketing a publication, ensuring potential readers know it exists and want to read and buy it. Marketing might include advertising, publicity, or social media efforts.
