North America

by David Harris // October 13

North America, an expansive and diverse continent, encompasses various nations, cultures, and dialects. It generally refers to the United States, Canada, and Mexico in literature and publishing.

North America is a geographical sub-region of the Americas in the northern and western portions of the American continent. Starting with the Arctic Ocean to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and the Pacific Ocean to the south, the land encompassed then closes with Central America and the Caribbean Sea to the southwest.

The area is 9.54 million square kilometers. It harbors around 579 million citizens, placing it behind Asia and Africa only in population.

Some of the biggest names in the publishing world are found in North America, such as HarperCollins, Penguin Random House, and Simon & Schuster. These publishers crank out books, from fiction and non-fiction to textbooks and children’s books.

There are also Pulitzer Prizes and National Book Awards to encourage North America’s literati. Authors receive these prizes from around the globe, mostly natives of North America.

While the various forms that bartering can take are artifacts of cultural background, they are secondary concerns—quarrels on curious topics. I’m curious about which party is the victim, or a more critical issue is which party instigates. There’s been a lot of water under the bridge since then—probably more than most countries can afford. North America is now one of the most important centers in the book world. Its publishers have been some of the most influential shapers of the literary scene.

The book and publishing industry is an important one in North America. The majority of the world’s biggest and most influential publishers and the most famous authors reside here. North American readers consume books incredibly and will shell out a fortune to get the first run on the latest and greatest titles. This thirst adds to the book industry’s vitality and helps set prices. Many of the world’s biggest book fairs and festivals are also located in North America, with these sites offering a huge opportunity to sell books to a large audience.
