The process that secures the pages or sections of a publication to keep them in order and to protect them. Binding may be stapled or sewn, sewn and enclosed in wrappers, or by gluing the pages to the outer cover, but most often refers to a hardcover binding.

Binding is the process of physically assembling a book from an ordered stack of paper sheets that are folded together into sections or sometimes left as a stack of individual sheets. The stack is then bound together along one edge by either sewing with thread through the folds or by a layer of flexible adhesive.

For protection, the outside surface of the book’s cover is often covered with a dust jacket or case.

The word bindery is derived from the word bind.

There are several different types of binding methods that are used in bookbinding today, including:

Saddle stitching – This method is typically used for smaller books such as magazines, catalogs, and pamphlets. The pages are printed on both sides and then folded in half. They are then stitched together at the spine with wire staples.

Perfect binding – This method is often used for larger books such as novels, textbooks, and manuals. The pages are printed on both sides and then trimmed to size. They are glued together at the spine and then the cover is glued to the spine.

Spiral binding – This method is used for books that need to lie flat when open, such as cookbooks and photo books. The pages are printed on both sides and then trimmed to size. They are then holes punched along the binding edge and a wire spiral is inserted through the holes.

Coil binding – This method is also used for books that need to lie flat when open. The pages are printed on both sides and then trimmed to size. They are then holes punched along the binding edge and a plastic coil is inserted through the holes.

Hardcover binding – This method is used for books that need a more durable binding, such as libraries books and reference books. The pages are printed on both sides and then trimmed to size. They are sewn together at the spine and then the cover is glued to the spine.

There are many different ways to decorate the cover of a book. The most common method is to print the title and author’s name on the cover. Other methods include blind embossing, foil stamping, and die-cutting.
