1,481 Italian Names for Characters

Italian Names
by David Harris // February 7

In an Italian family, a name can change as naturally as the speaker’s voice. Giuseppe may stand on the papers, become Peppe when friends call across the piazza, and turn into Peppino in his mother’s voice from the doorway. The character has not changed; the distance around him has. Give one form to a christening, another to an argument, and another to the person who still sees the little boy inside the man.

Italian names also give you more than a pleasing sound. Giovanni carries the meaning “Yahweh is gracious,” while Francesco means “javelin,” and the onomastico can place a name in the calendar: Francesco’s saint’s day is 4 October. Those details can sit quietly beneath a scene, shaping how a family addresses a child or why a particular name was chosen.

Listen for the name that makes your character enter the room before the description does. Let Giancarlo, Mariella, or Fiorenza set a different rhythm from Giovanni, Maria, or Chiara. Then follow the names below until one begins speaking in your story’s voice.

Italian names, with meanings and origins

1,235 names whose meaning or history is on record. Read where it comes from
right to left: the language furthest right is where the name started, and each step to the left
is the next mouth it passed through. The name day is the onomastico — the
saint’s day an Italian is wished auguri on, and a ready-made occasion if you need one.

Still not the one?

Sometimes the name you want isn’t on any list — you need to see options next to each
other until one sounds right. Our FREE
Character Name Generator
spins through combinations as fast as you can read them, and our
FREE Last Name Generator will find
the surname to go with whichever given name you chose above.

About this list. 1,481 Italian given names. 1,235 have a recorded meaning or origin; 246 do not, and are listed without one rather than being given one — 153 of those are entries where a source states outright that the etymology is unknown. 1,005 names are corroborated by more than one source.

Sources. Names and etymologies from English and Italian Wiktionary and Italian Wikipedia (CC BY-SA). Latin and Greek roots checked against Lewis & Short and Liddell–Scott–Jones; Hebrew roots against Strong’s Hebrew Dictionary (all public domain). Where those sources disagree or record no etymology, this page says so rather than choosing for you. How we research names

How to Choose an Italian Name

Begin with the sound you want in the scene, then test it against the meaning. Francesco reads warm and open, yet its root is “javelin”; that tension might suit a generous character with a quick temper or a fighter who dislikes being seen as dangerous. Meaning can also work as a quiet authorial signal. Lucia is “light,” Vittoria is “victory,” and Bianca is “white”—ideas your reader may never consciously notice, but may still feel gathering around the character.

Next, place the name inside the family. A formal Giuseppe can become Peppe among friends or Peppino in an intimate exchange. Adele can shift toward Adelino, Adelio, Adelo, or Adilio as the people around her use different forms. The right choice should sound as though this particular mother, sibling, lover, or rival would say it. Consider the character’s generation too: a name chosen by parents in one family story may sound wrong for a younger sibling, while a deliberately traditional name can reveal attachment, pride, or resistance.

Once the given name is working, pair it with a surname that keeps the same rhythm. Our FREE Last Name Generator can help you find a family name to complete the character without losing the Italian feel.

Where Italian Names Come From

Italian names carry several layers of language, and Latin forms the broadest bedrock. That inheritance gives names such as Marco, Lucia, and Vittoria a connection to meanings that still feel clear on the page: Mars, light, and victory. A writer can use that clarity as a quiet thread without making the name explain the character aloud.

Ancient Greek adds another strong layer, often carried through the Church and classical literature. Alessandro, Elena, Caterina, Agata, and Agnese each bring a different history of meaning, from a man who repels enemies to purity and goodness. Hebrew names carried through Christian tradition add another register: Giovanni, Giuseppe, and Beniamino can make a family’s naming customs feel deliberate and inherited.

A smaller Germanic seam sounds noticeably different when it enters an Italian cast. Leonardo, meaning “as strong as a lion,” and Enrico, meaning “home + ruler,” have a firmer, more compact weight than names built from the Latin or Greek layers. French contributes names such as Adele, whose “noble lineage” can suit either a proud family story or an ironic one. Together, these strands give you more than decoration: they give each name a past that can press gently against the character wearing it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these authentic Italian names?

Yes. The page contains genuine Italian given names, including familiar choices such as Giovanni, Marco, Francesca, and Lucia, alongside less expected options such as Agilulfo and Abbondio. Choose the one that feels right for the character rather than treating familiarity as the only test.

How do I choose an Italian name for a period setting?

Start with the character’s family, age, faith, and place in the story, then listen for whether the full form sounds appropriate in dialogue. A formal name can establish distance, while a diminutive can show intimacy. If the setting depends on a precise historical moment, check that the form you choose belongs naturally in that moment before committing to it.

What about Italian surnames?

A surname should support the given name’s rhythm and help distinguish relatives and generations. Try several combinations aloud, especially in dialogue, and use our FREE Last Name Generator when you want more possibilities.

Can I use these names in a published book or game?

Yes. Names are building blocks for your own characters, stories, and games. Give the name a role in the character’s life, test how it sounds beside the other names in your cast, and make the final choice your own.
